Manufacturing maternal health supplies

In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), reduced availability of critical maternal health (MH) products is putting the health of millions of women at risk across the region.

In 2020, 287,000 women died due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Nearly 75 percent of those deaths were due to postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).

To better understand the current challenges that prevent women from accessing quality-assured MH products, USP and the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition (RHSC) co-authored a report, Manufacturing landscape assessment for maternal health supplies in sub-Saharan Africa, which provides a path forward for creating a more stable and resilient supply chain for MH products.

This report assesses the demand for and manufacturing capacity of five MH commodities across eight countries in SSA and found an over reliance on foreign imports across all five products, few regional producers of several critical MH commodities, little diversification among already limited primary sources, and a lack of registered products due to outdated guidelines and lists.
