USP's 2020 Convention will take place during a milestone year, our 200th anniversary. Join us in May 3-6, 2020 to celebrate the legacy of trust we've built together and the continued work we're doing to positively impact lives now and into the future.
In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, USP has decided to modify our approach to the 2020 USP Convention Meeting and will not hold an in-person Convention Meeting in May of this year. We took this decision to both protect the health of USP staff, Convention Delegates, and volunteers, and because we believe that we are obligated - as a mission-driven public health organization - to take steps to help slow the spread of this pandemic by fostering social distancing. With this in mind, and in place of an in-person meeting, USP will meet its governance responsibilities, dialogue with Convention Members and other stakeholders, and celebrate USP’s 200th anniversary through the following approaches:
- We will hold a virtual USP Convention Governance Meeting on May 4 – 6. At this meeting, we will complete required governance activities which include the election of the next cycle Board of Trustees and Council of Experts and an open hearing and vote on Proposed Resolutions and on Bylaws amendments. We will take steps to enable participation of Convention Delegates joining from various time zones. We will provide Convention Members with more details on how this virtual meeting will be conducted and the agenda across those three days, as they become available. If you previously registered for the face-to-face Convention meeting, all travel made for you has been canceled. No further action is required on your part. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- We will organize a series of USP200 Meetings in the US and in other locations as soon as appropriate in 2020/21. Over the next twenty months, we will organize meetings with key stakeholders to engage with them on USP’s next cycle strategy; discuss and share the Resolutions that are approved at the virtual Governance Meeting; and create opportunities to celebrate USP’s 200-year legacy of impact and USP’s promise as we begin our third century. We have not yet set the dates or locations for these meetings. We will do so at an appropriate point, as soon as possible. Our intent is to have these meetings in the US, as well as in locations around the world.
While we are disappointed that we cannot proceed with the planned in-person meeting in May, we are pleased to have developed a 200th anniversary platform that will endure over time. Please visit USP.org to explore Trust eXperience, a data visualization project that graphically communicates the impact of USP standards on patients and public health over two centuries. You can also learn about Trust or Consequences 2040: Will innovations in health and medicine deliver?, a report that resulted from the collaboration between USP and the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence in which more than 100 experts from health and science discussed developments that could shape people’s health between now and 2040. By clicking on the link, you can also view, USP’s Trust TV which features discussions with healthcare thought leaders, sharing insights about trust in medicine from their specific perspectives.
While we have been developing alternative plans for the USP’s 2020 Convention and 200th anniversary program, USP staff and volunteers also have been working tirelessly to support the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. To learn more about these efforts, please click here.
We will post regular notices as our plans evolve over the coming months, as well as further updates on USP’s contributions to helping combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you for your continued support.
