Nominating Committee Begins Board of Trustee Recruitment

USP names Nominating Committee for next cycle of membership

Rockville, Md., September 11, 2019 — The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) has named its Nominating Committee that will develop a slate of candidates for the next five-year cycle of its Board of Trustees, which begins in 2020 – the 200th anniversary year of the nonprofit’s founding.  

USP is an independent scientific organization that collaborates with the world’s top experts in health and science to develop quality standards for medicines, dietary supplements, and food ingredients. Founded in 1820 by eleven physicians concerned about protecting the quality of medicines in the US, the organization’s standards are now used in more than 140 countries around the world. 

The Board of Trustees enables USP to maximize its impact by guiding the organization’s policies, finances, and strategic direction. The Board includes a president, treasurer, past-president, as well as two trustees who represent the medical sciences, two trustees who represent the pharmaceutical sciences, three trustees who serve in an at-large capacity, and one trustee who represents the public interest. 

Candidates will be elected in May 2020 by delegates representing USP’s member organizations at the USP Convention meeting, which is held every five years. USP member organizations represent a vast and important network of healthcare, patient and practitioner organizations, schools of pharmacy, and patient and consumer advocacy groups. Members of the Board of Trustees will begin their roles on July 1, 2020. 

The Nominating Committee includes leaders in healthcare and public health with connections to USP that give them unique insight and perspective into the role of a Board member. Committee members include current members of the Board of Trustees and other volunteer bodies, as well as representatives of USP’s member organizations, and the former USP secretary to the Convention, who retired last year: 

  • Susan de Mars, J.D., former USP Executive Vice President, Chief Legal Officer, and Secretary to the USP Convention 

  • Glen Fine, MS, MBA, CAE, is CEO of CLSI serves as Vice Chair of the USP Council of the Convention 

  • Timothy Franson, B.S.Pharm, M.D., USP trustee, Principal in the Health & FDA Practice for FaegreBD Consulting, and Board Chair- Critical Path Institute 

  • David Gaugh, Sr. VP, Sciences and Regulatory Affairs, Association for Accessible Medicines and serves as a member of the USP Council of the Convention 

  • Duane Kirking, Pharm.D., Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan, member of the USP Healthcare Quality & Safety Expert Committee, and former USP Trustee 

  • Hanan Sboul, MBA, CAE, Secretary General of the Jordanian Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and serves as a Board member of JFDA 

  • Thomas R. Temple, M.S., B.S. Pharm., FAPhA, Director of Strategic Communication for the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy, President of Thomas Temple Consulting, and current USP trustee 

  • Kasey K. Thompson, Pharm.D., M.S., M.B.A., COO and Sr. VP of ASHP and member of the USP Council of the Convention
