Standards Development

USP standards for dietary ingredients, dietary supplements, and herbal medicines are a resource for public specifications and scientifically valid methods that can help in GMP compliance, mitigating adulteration risk and in safeguarding the supply chain for ingredients and supplements.

Donors who provide methods and data are the foundation of the development of USP standards. By sponsoring monographs or general chapters and their supporting reference standards, you can help shape specifications and test methods, support public health, and improve the quality of products worldwide.

There is no direct cost or fees associated with becoming a USP donor, just your expertise, time, and willingness to work with USP. In many cases, your contributions may be tax deductible.

You can support standards development by:

  1. Providing supporting data for the development of new monographs or proposing monograph revisions and modernizations for finished dosage forms of dietary supplements, dietary ingredients (botanical and non-botanical) and herbal medicines
    • Supporting data may include commercial specifications sheets, certificates of analysis, manufacturing process flowcharts, and analytical methods and validation reports (if available).
  2. Reviewing and submitting comments on our standards through Pharmacopeial Forum and Herbal Medicines Compendium
  3. Contributing materials to use for USP reference standards development
  4. Volunteering your time and expertise by becoming part of an expert committee or expert panel
