The governing body guides USP’s development of quality standards for medicines, dietary supplements, and food ingredients.
Rockville, MD – May 16, 2025 – The United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is announcing today the newly elected members of its Council of Experts. Members were elected at the 2025 USP Convention Meeting by the USP Convention comprised of more than 450 organizations including healthcare practitioner organizations, government and regulatory agencies, as well as scientific, academic, and patient groups, from the US and around the world. The Council of Experts is one of USP’s three volunteer leaderships bodies including the Council of the Convention and the USP Board of Trustees.
The Council of Experts leads USP’s standard setting committees that create and revise the standards that appear in the U.S. Pharmacopeia–National Formulary (USP–NF), the legally recognized official compendium of standards for drugs and drug ingredients in the United States; the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), an internationally accepted compendium for food ingredients; and the USP Herbal Medicines Compendium (HMC). Expert Committees address specific standards setting areas within USP, such as chemical medicines, biologics, excipients, general chapters, and many others. USP Expert Committees are comprised of scientific experts who volunteer their time and expertise, working alongside US FDA and other government liaisons.
“Backed by USP’s dedicated staff scientists, our body of independent experts embodies the scientific rigor and innovative thinking needed to confront emerging quality challenges. Together, we establish standards to help ensure that products used by patients and consumers everywhere meet standards for quality,” said Fouad Atouf, PhD, USP’s incoming Chair of the USP Council of Experts and Chief Science Officer, effective July 1, 2025. “Incorporated into law in more than 40 countries and used in more than 140, the USP-NF public standards established by USP’s Council of Experts protect and promote availability of quality medicines for people around the world.”
