Former CEO of Iowa Pharmacy Association to Guide USP’s Mission

Rockville, Md., November 21, 2016 — The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) announced that Thomas R. Temple, R.Ph., M.S., has been re-elected chairman of its Board of Trustees. Temple was first elected to the role in 2013.

During his tenure as chair, the board has overseen record growth and implementation of a new strategic plan at the independent standards-setting organization. Approved in 2015, USP’s five year strategy sets seven goals to further the organization’s mission of improving health worldwide by advancing public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods.

“The new strategic plan sets concrete goals to increase USP’s impact on public health by continuing to modernize standards, tailoring programs to meet the needs of stakeholders, and investing in the organization’s future capabilities and sustainability,” said Temple. “My focus as chair will be to work with management, Convention membership, the Council of Experts and other USP volunteer experts, along with the Board of Trustees, to make progress on these goals. It is an exciting time at USP, and I am honored to be elected by my colleagues to this position.”

“USP is proud to have Tom Temple continue as board chair. Over the last four years his leadership has provided continuity during the transition between convention cycles and in developing and launching the new strategic plan,” said Dr. Ronald T. Piervincenzi, USP’s Chief Executive Officer. “He has helped ensure that USP is in a position of strength as we advocate for the use of quality standards throughout the world and as we prepare to mark our bicentennial.”

Mr. Temple was first elected as a Trustee at Large in 2010 after years serving as a USP volunteer expert in many other capacities. He is the Director of Strategic Communications at the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy and president of Tom Temple Consulting Inc.

Mr. Temple is a member of several professional organizations, including the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA), where he served as Executive Vice President and CEO. He is also a member of the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA). A past president of NASPA, he has also served as a board member for the APhA Foundation, the University of Iowa Alumni Association, and the Alliance for Patient Medication Safety.

Mr. Temple received a B.S. degree in biology from Northern Illinois University, a B.S. degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois, and an M.S. degree in pharmacy administration from the University of Iowa.
