USP Names Fouad Atouf Senior Vice President, Biologics

ROCKVILLE, MD, - March 15, 2023 - The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) today announced the appointment of Fouad Atouf, Ph.D., as Senior Vice President of Biologics. In this capacity, he will shape and implement USP’s biologics strategy focusing on growth and innovation to help ensure the quality of these medicines.

“During my time at USP, I have witnessed firsthand the important role of biologic treatments and therapies in patient care, and the impact ensuring quality can have,” said Atouf. “I look forward to the ongoing collaboration with practitioners, industry and regulators in addressing the quality of biological medicines and the development of standards for these complex and innovative treatments.”

A thought leader in biologics, Fouad is well-known in the field and relied upon for his expertise internally and externally, frequently representing USP at global pharmaceutical science events. Since joining USP in 2006, Fouad has held many roles, including Senior Scientific Liaison, Senior Director of Biologics and Biotechnology and Vice President of Global Biologics. He has built a network of strong relationships with global stakeholders and key partners including the World Health Organization, the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and American Type Culture Collection (ATCC).

Since 2021, Fouad has implemented the development of solutions-based products and approaches including standards for monoclonal antibodies, increases in industry stakeholder engagement and donations, and exploration of new tools to support manufacturing and quality of new modalities such as cell and gene therapies.

“Fouad played a central role in leading our biologics strategy development and implementation focusing on technologies that have positively impacted the lives of patients,” said Ronald T. Piervincenzi, Ph.D., CEO of USP. “His efforts have increased our visibility in this evolving area of medicine. Through his leadership, we will expand our biologics portfolio to meet the growing need for manufacturers to ensure quality throughout the product delivery lifecycle.”

A former research fellow at the National Institutes of Health and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Fouad earned his bachelor’s in biology from the Université Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah in Fès, Morocco, and a master’s in biochemistry and doctorate in cell biology from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, France.
