Mozambique

Mozambique lies in Southeastern Africa along the Mozambique Channel between South Africa and Tanzania. Much of the country is coastal lowlands, gradually rising to plateaus in the northwest and mountains in west. Recurrent drought in the uplands has resulted in migration of the population to urban and coastal areas, like the capital city of Maputo. A July 2005 estimate reports a total population of 19.4 million, seventy percent of which lives below poverty level. The infant mortality rate is 104/1000 births and life expectancy is 42 years (2004), a result of excess mortality due to AIDS.

During 2001-2004, USP DQI worked with USAID-Mozambique to provide technical assistance and support to the Center for Drug Information (CiMed). The Center is located in the Medical School of University Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, which provides office, classroom and meeting space, personnel support, and utilities for CiMed operations.

CiMed works with the Ministry of Health, Pharmaceutical Division, advising its National Therapeutic Council (NTC) on specific drug registration procedures and providing updated information about the medicines proposed for registration. CiMed also works with the Government of Mozambique providing assistance in developing the National Formulary of Medicines and serves as a repository of materials for the National Drug Registration System.

CiMed regularly responds to inquiries on specific drugs from all over the country and issues periodic bulletins with current information on selected drugs and topics of interest to area health care providers. CiMed staff conduct special seminars and conferences on relevant subjects for medical and pharmacy school students and for others in the medical community.
