Q. What are the web browser requirements for the USP–NF CD?
A. See Technical Requirements for details.
Q. Does USP-NF CD work on all models of CD-RWs?
A.

No. USP-NF CD does not work on the following models of CD-RWs: Optiarc DVD-RW, Compaq CRD-8484B, TEAC CD-W28E, Sony DVD-RW DRU-810A DVD-RW, and older LG CD ROM Drives.

Q. As a Windows Vista user, why do I get the message "Hexalock is not compatible with Vista" upon installation?
A.

Windows Vista users of the USP31–NF26 CD or later may encounter this error (and/or other errors interrupting installation) that causes Vista to interrupt the program's installation operation. HexaLock, a component vendor for our software, has provided the following patch/workaround to resolve this issue.

To avoid this error message:

  1. Download the Hexalock Vista update utility at http://hexalock.co.il/downloads/files/VistaFix.zip.
  2. Extract the files from this zip file to your hard drive.
  3. Right click on setup.exe and click "Run as administrator."
  4. Double-click on the setup.exe file. The "HLV" Vista Compatibility Utility will install. The installation program will set up a desktop icon for the utility on your computer desktop.
  5. Double-click this desktop icon and, in the open window, click the Enable Vista Compatibility button.
  6. Click this desktop icon and click the Enable Vista Compatibility button again to run protected discs.
Q. Why does the error "IE 4.0 Not Supported" display after I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7?
A.

This error can occur on CDs between USP28–NF23 and USP29–NF24 Supplement 2. To correct this issue, replace the file C:\ProgramFiles\USP\<edition folder>\webapps\uspnf\pub\javascript\mtmcode.js with this version (34KB).

Q. Why does the CD appear to be blank?
A.

Some older CD ROM drives cannot correctly read multi–session CDs. If your USP–NF CD appears to be blank, first try loading it into a newer PC. If the CD still cannot be read, contact USP Technical Support at

Q. Why does the error "This program cannot run without the original CD in the drive" appear when I attempt to install from the original CD?
A.

Some Sony and Phillips DVD RW drives cannot correctly read the CD. If your USP–NF CD fails to install, first try loading it from a different CD drive or onto a different PC. If the CD still cannot be installed, contact USP Technical Support at .

Q. When entering my CD Key into the fields, I have room left over, is that normal?
A.

There are four groups of six characters each. Use the "tab" key to navigate to each group. (The CD Key is case–sensitive and must be typed in uppercase.)

Q. Do I need to change the port number displayed during installation?
A.

The port number you see during installation is the default port the USP–NF CD uses to communicate with itself at run-time. It is not recommended that you reset the port unless you know you have other software running that uses the same port

Q. What do I do if my firewall software is blocking internet access to the application?
A.

If you are using firewall software that blocks internet access to applications, you must allow access for jre\bin\javaw.exe in the installation folder you select. This program serves the USP–NF CD content, but does not pose a threat to your system or respond to any requests from other machines. For more information about allowing applications to access the internet, refer to your firewall software's documentation.

Q. Why does the application open as a link in my browser?
A.

This occurs for some Windows XP users who have installed Service Pack (SP) 2. SP2 includes changes to Internet Explorer that cause it to consider the USP–NF CD application as suspicious. Simply click the link to proceed to the application.

Q. Why is the application slow the first time I perform a search?
A.

The USP–NF CD may appear to take longer the first time you search or load some pages. This occurs as the pages are loaded into memory during their first execution. After this, the pages respond very quickly because they are already loaded and running.

Q. Why does a DOS Window display with the title "javac" sometimes?
A.

You might see this window on slower systems when the application is used for the first time. It will flash briefly and then disappear the first time you access some pages like the Table of Contents or Advanced Search page. You can ignore this window if it does display. Do not close it. It will close on its own.

Q. Does the USP–NF CD come in a Macintosh version?
A.

There is no Macintosh version of the CD product. Macintosh users can access USP–NF by purchasing the online version.

Q. Do I need internet access to run the USP–NF CD?
A.

No. The USP–NF CD is built on internet technology, but you do not need a connection to the internet to run it. The application communicates only with itself and your browser. It will not answer to requests from other machines and does not send information outside your machine. However, there are several links on the application toolbar which link to external USP Web sites. You will need Internet access to open these links.
