PDF Downloading Frequently Asked Questions

Printing FAQs

Q. Do you have the current version of Adobe Reader?
A.
  • To determine the version of Adobe Reader, open Adobe Reader from your desktop or start menu, click on help, and then About Reader.
  • If you have a version of Adobe Reader less than 4.0, we recommend you update your reader to version 6.0.
  • Download the latest version of Adobe Reader free from the Adobe Web site. Get Adobe Reader now.
Q. Does the PDF display poorly?
A. Some PDF documents may appear fuzzy and grainy when viewed using Adobe Reader versions prior to 6.0. In order to correct this, in Adobe Reader versions 3.x, 4.x and 5.x., follow the steps below:
  • Start Adobe Reader
  • In Adobe Reader, choose Edit > Preferences > General > Display.
  • Ensure that the "Smooth Text", "Smooth Line Art" and "Smooth Images" boxes are checked.
  • Click OK.

After making these changes, the PDF file should display properly.

Q. How can I confirm my Adobe configuration?
A. When accessing PDF files on the Web, you typically have two options: (1) open the PDF file within the browser window, or (2) open the PDF file in Adobe Reader as a separate application. We recommend option (2) opening the PDF file in Adobe Reader outside the browser window.  In order to confirm this setting, follow the steps below:
  • For Adobe Reader Version 4.0:
    • Start Adobe Reader 4.0.
    • In Adobe Reader, choose File > Preferences > General.
    • Deselect Web Browser Integration in the Options area of the General Preferences dialog box.
    • Click OK, and then exit from the Adobe Reader.
    • You may need to close and re-launch your browser for these changes to take effect.
  • For Adobe Reader Version 5.0:
    • Start Adobe Reader 5.0.
    • In Adobe Reader, choose Edit > Preferences > Options.
    • Deselect Display PDF in Browser in the Web Browser Options area.
    • Click OK, and then exit from the Adobe Reader.
    • You may need to close and re-launch your browser for these changes to take effect.
  • If you are not sure what version of Adobe Reader you are currently using reference:Verify that you have a current version of Adobe Reader above.
  • Once these changes are made you may be prompted with a message stating "You have chosen to download a file from this location.  What would you like to do?". You may either: (1) Open the file from the current location or (2) Save the file to disk.  Note: there is a check box asking "Always ask before opening this type of file" - De-select this checkbox if you do not want to always be prompted with this option of launching or saving locally.
  • To continue to browse on the web you will need to return back to your web browser.
Q. How do I save a PDF file to my PC?
A. Rather than modifying your Adobe settings as mentioned in the section above "Confirm Your Adobe Configuration", alternatively you may save the file to your local computer.  To save the file to your local PC, this can normally be accomplished as follows:
  • Right click on the title link.
  • Select "Save Target As" (Internet Explorer) or "Save Link As" (Netscape) when presented with a menu (If your mouse is configured for left handed operation use the left mouse button).
  • Use Adobe Reader to open the file directly after downloading.
Q. When downloading a PDF form, my web browser window goes blank and I never receive the file.
A. Should you experience PDF files appearing as a blank window within your web browser after downloading, follow the appropriate steps below to resolve the issue:

Adobe Reader
If you are using Adobe Reader version 3.0 or earlier, upgrade to the latest version.

Use the "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As..." option to download the PDF file directly to your hard drive and bypass the Adobe Reader plug-in.

  • Select "PDF File Format" if necessary.
  • Select the file(s) you wish to download.
  • Click the "Review Selected Files" button.
  • When presented with the Results page use the "Save Target As.." option to download the file. This can normally be accomplished by right clicking (left click, if your mouse is configured for left handed operation) on the title link then selecting "Save Target As.." when presented with a menu.
  • Use Adobe Reader to open the file after downloading.
Q. Adobe Reader claims the PDF file is damaged when I try to open it after downloading. Is your file damaged?
A. All of our files are verified prior to posting on the Web site. Most likely your download was not successful. Try downloading the file again.
Q. I am still having problems. What should I do?
A. If you continue to have difficulties downloading or viewing PDFs, please contact your Help Desk and indicate the PDF problem you are encountering.
