Industry Participation in Reference Standards Development

A key component in establishing USP Reference Standards is the voluntary cooperation among three groups—industry, government, and USP. USP encourages industry to get involved in the development of official Reference Standards in two ways:

  • Supply a bulk quantity of drug substances, dosage forms, excipients, or other materials that USP might request as candidates for official Reference Standards
  • Participate in collaborative testing by testing candidate materials provided by USP in your laboratories

You can also submit your ideas for new Reference Standards you want USP to establish.

Providing bulk candidate materials to USP and participating in collaborative testing helps you

  • Qualify for a tax deduction for the value of the materials you donate to USP
  • Prepare for regulatory inspections, based on familiarity with official requirements
  • Contribute to quality in public health worldwide by helping to ensure the continuous availability of official Reference Standards
