USP Advances Standards to Help Ensure the Quality of Infant Formula — USP is proposing new standards for certain ingredients that are commonly added to infant formula. The proposed standards are for three nucleotides, present in breast milk and commonly added to infant formula, and two docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) oils (essential omega 3 fatty acids) present in fish, which are often added. No such standards with validated test methods and corresponding reference materials currently exist for these ingredients within any food compendium. USP believes consumers deserve to know that the products they are feeding their infants contain pure and high quality ingredients—as do manufacturers who seek to provide the best possible product to their customers. Once finalized, the standards will appear in USP's Food Chemicals Codex (FCC); currently, they are available for public review and comment through the FCC Forum. Comments will be accepted through March 31, 2010.
National and International Coverage of USP's Contributions is Expanding — USP was mentioned in roughly 100 news stories in December 2009, reaching an audience of more than 43 million people. Articles about USP's revised standards for the labeling of caps and ferrules to prevent medication errors were published in Packaging World, Pharmaceutical & Packaging News, and Pharmaceutical Technology. The USP Verified program for dietary supplements was mentioned on the Oprah spin–off, The Doctor Oz Show, and in print/online publications including Better Homes & Gardens, Men's Health, The New York Times, and USA Weekend, among others. USP also received international coverage in countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Canada, The United Kingdom, France, India, and China.
