Delegate Notebook Updated: Important Report Now Available — In less than one month, the membership of the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention will meet in Washington, D.C. The Nominating Committee report containing biographical information on the candidates for the 2010–2015 Council of Experts has been posted in the Delegate’s Virtual Notebook. The elections process, an election worksheet, an updated Meeting-at-a-Glance and other background materials are also available. The Report of the Nominating Committee for the 2010–2015 Officers and Trustees will be posted shortly. Even though meeting attendees will receive a notebook with paper copies of these materials when they register at the hotel on April 21st, Delegates are encouraged to read and understand the elections process, review these reports, and consult the Delegate Checklist now to prepare for the meeting.
Distinguished Scientists and Public Health Experts to Address USP Membership — The 2010 meeting of USP's Convention membership will open with a Scientific Symposium on April 22nd, featuring the following distinguished speakers:
- Rita R. Colwell, Ph.D., D.Sc. , Distinguished University Professor, Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, University of Maryland, adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, 2010 winner of the Stockholm Water Prize; and member, USP Board of Trustees
- Peter C. Agre, M.D. , Nobel laureate in chemistry, president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and head of the Malaria Research Institute at Johns Hopkins University
- Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. , director of the National Institutes of Health
On April 23rd, greetings from Convention member organizations will be offered by the following:
- Food and Drug Administration – Margaret Hamburg, M.D. , Commissioner
- American Medical Association – Michael Maves, M.D., M.B.A. , chief executive officer
- American Pharmacists Association – Thomas E. Menighan, B.S. Pharm, M.B.A. , chief executive officer
- AARP – Jennie Chin Hansen, R.N., M.S., F.A.A.N. , president, also chief executive officer of the American Geriatrics Society
USP Board Member Rita S. Colwell, Ph.D., D.Sc., Receives Stockholm Water Prize — Recognizing a long career of groundbreaking research into the prevention of cholera and other waterborne diseases, the Stockholm International Water Institute has awarded its 20th annual laureate to USP Board of Trustees member Rita S. Colwell, Ph.D., D.Sc. Dr. Colwell will be a keynote speaker on April 22 at the USP Convention’s Membership Meeting. The Stockholm Water Prize is awarded to individuals and institutions for contributions to management of the world’s water resources. The award will be presented to Dr. Colwell by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at a Royal Award Ceremony on September 9 during the 2010 World Water Week in Stockholm.
