USP Quality Review

No. 61, Issued 03/98

Suggestions for health care practitioners:

  • Be alert to the appropriate storage and handling conditions for the drug products you order, dispense, and administer. When in doubt, contact the pharmacy or the manufacturer.
  • Store products appropriately.
  • Be aware of any changes in the requirements for storing any products you handle.
  • Counsel patients on the proper storage of their prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.
    • Explain storage terminology such as "Controlled Room Temperature, Cool, Excessive Heat, Cold, Freezer" as defined by the USP. (See Quality Review No. 40, What's Cool and What's Not.)
    • Include storage instructions on the prescription container whenever possible.
    • Define specific areas that are not appropriate for storage of medications, such as the bathroom, a pocket, or an automobile dashboard or trunk.
    • Review with the patient complex product storage and use instructions such as those for Miacalcin.
