Dear USP Convention Delegates and Executive Officers of Member Organizations:

USP Shines the Spotlight on Mary H. Hager, Ph.D., R.D., F.A.D.A. — Dr. Mary Hager serves on the Council of the Convention (CoC), chairs the CoC Section on the Quality of Food Ingredients and Dietary Supplements, chairs the 2010 Resolutions Committee, and is the USP Convention delegate representing the American Dietetic Association.

Information Sheet Describes USP’s Technical Assistance in Developing Countries — USP Convention members and Official Observers recently received a mailing from the CoC Section on Global Public Health. The cover letter and information sheet  (244KB) describe the USP Drug Quality and Information (DQI) Program – a cooperative agreement between USP and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).

Latest Issue of The Standard Includes News on Updated Standards, USP’s Work in Senegal, First USP Verified Traditional Chinese Medicine, and more — The Fall issue of The Standard, USP’s quarterly newsletter, is now available on the USP Web site.

USP to Collaborate with Mexico on Standards for Medicines — USP and the Permanent Commission of the Pharmacopeia of the United Mexican States (FEUM), a member organization of the USP Convention, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, agreeing to collaborate on the development of standards for medicines.

Final Call for Council of Experts Candidates — USP is issuing its third and final call for candidates for the Council of Experts (the chairs of USP’s Expert Committees). The application deadline is December 18, 2009.

USP Thanks 2009 Summer Interns — USP’s summer interns presented the results of their work to staff at USP Headquarters on August 14th.

  • Emily Vernamonti is entering her senior year at Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, MD where she is pursuing a B.S. in chemistry. She interned in the Reference Standards Laboratory, working on a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) project
  • Erin Webster, also a chemistry major, is in her final year of undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She interned in the Analytical Research and Development Laboratory, working on updates for seven identification tests in General Chapter <191>. Ms. Webster also assisted in the development of an Ion Chromatography method that successfully identifies lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, manganese, calcium, and magnesium in a single run.
  • Jessica Moreno is earning her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. During her internship in the Documentary Standards Division, she explored nanotechnology and techniques used to characterize and identify nanomaterials.
