Thomas R. Temple, R.Ph.
USP Member from the Iowa Pharmacists Association and Chair of USP's Membership Committee

Thomas R. Temple, R.Ph., USP Member from the Iowa Pharmacists Association and Chair of USP's Membership Committee

The dedicated service and valuable contributions of USP volunteers is a key element in achieving USP's mission of promoting the health of the citizens of the world.

This issue of the USP Member Spotlight is on Thomas R. Temple, R.Ph., USP Member from the Iowa Pharmacists Association and Chair of USP's Membership Committee. The important work of the Membership Committee contributes to the success of USP by identifying and recommending to the Board those organizations for Convention Membership that will help ensure that a diverse range of interests will be represented within the Convention.

Since its first meeting in November of 2005, the Membership Committee (MC), under Mr. Temple's leadership, has developed criteria by which potential member organizations are evaluated and established a process for monitoring and contacting organizations that do not appoint members in a timely fashion. The MC has vetted and recommended 75 organizations for USP Membership. At its next meeting, Mr. Temple will guide the MC as they establish criteria for an official "observer status" in the Convention, and develop a process for moving well-engaged organizations from invited status to permanent status via the USP Constitution.

In addition to his USP work, Mr. Temple is the Executive Vice President and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA). He also serves as CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation (IPF) and Pharmacy Network of Iowa (PNI) — two subsidiary corporations of the IPA.

Mr. Temple is a member of several professional organizations including, American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, American Pharmacists Association, the American Society of Association Executives and is a past president of the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (formerly NCSPAE). He has served as a Board member for Quality Assurance, Inc., the Pharmacy Marketing Group and Health Connect, and as a member of numerous professional committees including The Medic Alert National Task Force, Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Continuing Education Advisory Council, ACPE's Doctoral Fellowship Committee, the State Advisory Panel to the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and Advisory Committees for Drake University and the University of Iowa Colleges of Pharmacy. He has served as a member of Pharmacy Advisory Boards for Upjohn, Glaxo, Merck, Mallinckrodt, and PCS.

Mr. Temple's leadership has been recognized through receipt of several awards, including American Pharmacists Association's Gloria Neimeyer-Francke Leadership Mentor Award, the Medic Alert Outstanding Service Award, the University of Illinois' College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the Year Award, and the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni Award.

USP is proud to feature this distinguished volunteer for his tireless contributions on behalf of pharmacists and patients, and to recognize him for his commitment to USP.
