John W. Mauger, Ph.D.
USP Member from the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, Chair of the USP Board of Trustees
The dedicated service and valuable contributions of USP volunteers is a key element in achieving USP's mission of promoting public health.
This issue of the USP Member Spotlight shines on John W. Mauger, Ph.D., professor and dean of the University of Utah College of Pharmacy and chair of the USP Board of Trustees.
Dr. Mauger was elected USP Board chair at the 2005 meeting of the USP Convention, and re–elected to subsequent terms as chair in 2006, 2007, and 2008. During his tenure as chair, he has provided sound leadership during a highly transformative period for USP, overseeing its evolution from a domestic to a global organization as USP opened four international sites in Basel, Switzerland; Hyderabad, India; Shanghai, China; and São Paulo, Brazil. Dr. Mauger has traveled throughout the world on behalf of USP, visiting the USP–China site prior to its inauguration in September 2006, and representing the organization at meetings of the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM) in Strasbourg, France, in 2007, and the World Health Professions Alliance in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2008. Dr. Mauger played an integral part of the grand opening celebration of USP's new state–of–the–art headquarters in Rockville, Md., in March 2008, providing keynote remarks to the audience of Congressional, scientific, industry, and international representatives and presiding over the ceremonial ribbon–cutting.
Over the past year, Dr. Mauger has worked with the entire USP board to develop a new strategic plan that will lead the organization to 2010 and beyond. This new plan is crucial for the organization as it works to fulfill its mission of improving the health of people throughout the world through public standards that help to ensure the quality and safety of medicines and foods. Dr. Mauger offers his personal observations on the importance of this new strategic plan and USP's standards–setting mission on page two of this newsletter.
Dr. Mauger joined the University of Utah, College of Pharmacy as dean and professor of the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry in 1994, having previously served as a faculty member in the colleges of pharmacy at West Virginia University and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Among his professional service activities, he is a past president of the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education and a member of the editorial advisory board for Pharmaceutical Development and Technology. Dr. Mauger was recently elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
His article, titled "Fluid and Particle Laser Doppler Velocity Measurements and Mass Transport Predictions in the USP Paddle Dissolution Apparatus," published in 1990, is recognized as a landmark paper in the use of fluid mechanical measurements to investigate the performance of USP dissolution apparatuses.
Dr. Mauger received his bachelor of science degree in pharmacy from the Albany College of Pharmacy in 1965, his master of science degree in pharmaceutics from the University of Rhode Island in 1968, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1971.
USP is grateful to Dr. Mauger for his unending commitment to USP and to the greater public health–which he has influenced significantly through his contributions to food and drug standards.
