USP Member Spotlight – Spring 2008
Gordon R. Johnston, R.Ph.
USP Member from the Generic Pharmaceutical Association and Member of the Council of the Convention
The Standard (formerly USP Press) shines the USP Member Spotlight on Gordon R. Johnston, R.Ph., vice president of regulatory sciences for the Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA). In this role, Mr. Johnson serves as the primary industry spokesperson on regulatory and scientific matters that impact the generic drug industry.
Mr. Johnston also serves as the primary USP contact for GPhA. He has contributed his time and talent on a variety of important activities for USP, including serving as a long-time member of the Prescription/ Nonprescription Stakeholder Forum and several Project Teams, which provide scientific and technical expertise to the Council of Experts, its Expert Committees, and USP staff. Mr. Johnston began his service as a Convention delegate for GPhA in the last cycle (2000-2005). In 2005, he agreed to become a member of the Council of the Convention, and currently chairs the section on the Quality of Manufactured Medicines. Throughout his association with USP, Mr. Johnston has been an active participant on compendial topics of interest to the generic industry, even initiating a compendial discussion forum within GPhA to discuss these issues with USP on a regular basis.
Before working at GPhA, Mr. Johnston was deputy director of the Office of Generic Drugs at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). As one might imagine, while at FDA Mr. Johnston also was involved with USP. He has more than 25 years of experience with the pharmaceutical industry, beginning with the U.S. Public Health Service, where he served in a number of pharmacist and health care management positions.
We are proud to feature this distinguished volunteer for his contributions to public health and USP and thank him for his continuing commitment to USP.
