Council of the Convention

The Council of the Convention (CoC) was established by Constitutional amendment at the stated meeting of the membership in 2005. (The "stated" meeting occurs once every five years and is called the Convention.) The Constitution provides that the CoC be composed of not more than 25 USP members appointed by the President of the Convention and the Executive Vice President–CEO with the advice and consent of the Board of Trustees. The CoC must include at least one member from each of the membership categories described in the Constitution. Currently, the CoC has 24 members.

Through a 2005 resolution, the CoC was charged, as an ongoing responsibility, to review the purpose, role, and composition of the Convention membership and examine the voting procedures used during the Convention. As additional guidance, the resolution directs the CoC to consider the recommendations of the ad hoc Advisory Committee on Resolution 18 (2000–2005 resolution). Based on the 2005 resolution and recommendations from the ad hoc Committee, the CoC is focusing on an in–depth review of the USP Convention and serving as a communications conduit to and from the Convention membership. Through its Communication Campaign, the CoC provides updates to the Convention membership on USP programs and activities, with the goal of keeping Convention members informed and engaged between Convention meetings.

The CoC represents the following communities of interest, or "sections:"

  • Quality of Manufactured Medicines (QMM)
  • Quality of Compounded Medicines (QCM)
  • Quality of Food Ingredients and Dietary Supplements (QFIDS)
  • Quality of Patient Care (QPC)
  • Global Public Health (GPH)

The CoC urges you to read the series of important white papers offered below. They were written by USP experts in collaboration with the members of the CoC and examine the essential role USP’s public standards play in an era of healthcare crisis and reform. The white papers map out key challenges and opportunities facing the organization, and help to lay the groundwork for USP’s future directions. The white papers are a must-read for all USP Convention member organizations and delegates, particularly as we approach our April 2010 membership meeting. Read the White Papers
