Governance

USP's three governing bodies — the Convention membership, Board of Trustees, and the Council of Experts and its Expert Committees — are made up entirely of volunteers. An executive team, along with a staff of more than 450, supports these volunteers in framing strategies, implementing tactics, and carrying out the day-to-day operations necessary to ensure good pharmaceutical care for all.

Convention Membership

The USP Convention membership is constituted to ensure suitable representation of those sections of the pharmaceutical care system that are impacted by and in turn impact USP's activities. The Convention has about 450 member organizations including U.S. colleges and state associations of medicine and pharmacy; governments of the U.S. and other countries; national and international health professional, scientific, and trade organizations; pharmaceutical industry associations; and consumer organizations.

Representatives from these organizations (USP Members) guide and facilitate USP's work to ensure good pharmaceutical care for all through discussions that address issues of interest to their constituents, voting on resolutions that guide USP's policies and initiatives, and electing the USP Convention officers (the president and treasurer), trustees, and the Council of Experts. Members keep their constituencies informed of USP activities and issues and share with USP information and perspectives from colleagues in their organizations that are relevant to USP.

Board of Trustees

The USP Board of Trustees is elected every 5 years by the Convention membership. The board makes decisions that guide USP's policies, finances, and strategic direction. The board comprises two trustees who represent the medical sciences; two trustees who represent the pharmaceutical sciences; three trustees who serve in an at-large capacity; and one trustee who represents the public interest. The officers include a president, treasurer, and past president.

The Board chairperson, the president and treasurer of the Convention, and the public trustee makes up the Executive Committee. The Board chairperson is elected annually by the trustees. The Board selects the USP executive vice president-chief executive officer (EVP-CEO). The EVP-CEO also serves as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee, and chairperson of both the Council of Experts and Executive Committee of the Council of Experts. USP's senior vice president-chief operating officer also serves as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the Executive Committee of the Board.

Council of Experts and Expert Committees

The Council of Experts is the body that makes USP's scientific and standards-setting decisions. Members of the council are elected by the USP Convention membership. Each council member serves as the chair of an Expert Committee for a 5-year term. The chairs elect the members of the Expert Committees who also serve 5-year terms. The Council of Experts and its Expert Committees provide the scientific foundation for USP's public health products and programs.
