In 2005, USP opened USP–India Private Limited, its first office and collaborative testing laboratory facility outside the United States, in IKP Knowledge Park in Hyderabad, India. Staffed by more than 90 scientific and quality assurance experts from India, the site supports USP’s international efforts to set public standards for medicines, dietary supplements, and food ingredients.

 

Facilities

Since the USP–India site opened, India’s pharmaceutical industry has continued to grow rapidly, resulting in an increased demand for USP standards and services. To better serve the region, in 2011, USP completed a large-scale expansion project that increased the facility size from 14,000 sq. ft. to more than 100,000 sq. ft. The new site has significantly augmented USP–India’s capacity for analytical chemistry and collaborative testing as well as for exploring  new initiatives such as bio-analytic chemistry. In addition, the new space plays an important role in housing activities involved in the development of the Medicines Compendium (MC) and associated MC reference materials.

USP–India, through USP’s global certificate, is certified to ISO 9001:2008 and the USP–India site has earned accreditation to IS0 17025:2005.

Services & Activities

Establishing a presence in India has allowed USP to pursue collaborative opportunities with leaders in India’s pharmaceutical and foods sectors. These endeavors have helped unite USP’s standards-setting experience and India’s own native scientific capabilities, resulting in the development of documentary and physical reference standards that better meet national and regional needs, as well as benefit the global supply chain.
