Visiting Scientist Program

The USP Visiting Scientist Program (VSP) develops and promotes international harmonization of standards through the exchange of scientific staff and information with global collaborators and organizations committed to pharmacopeial advancement. Participating organizations typically include international drug regulatory bodies, pharmacopeias, and drug control laboratories.

Created several decades ago, VSP was revamped in 2010 to strengthen alignment of the participants’ technical competence and experience with USP's technical needs and objectives. At this time, USP expanded the program from three or four participants per year to ten per year.

The program typically entails a three-month visit to USP's headquarters in Rockville, MD, where VSP participants work hand-in-hand with USP scientific and technical staff on projects of mutual interest, such as methods of pharmaceutical analysis and the development process by which USP Reference Standards and monographs are established.

VSP Selection Process

Participants are non-U.S. scientists who are selected once a year via a competitive nomination process.
