Vice President, External Affairs and Strategic Integration Matthew Heyman, M.S.

Matthew Heyman is vice president of external affairs and strategic integration for USP. He is responsible for developing and implementing external affairs strategies for the organization that align with and promote its priorities and support its mission of improving health through public standards and related programs that help ensure the quality, safety, and benefit of medicines and foods. Mr. Heyman manages outreach to USP's various external constituencies, overseeing the organization's government relations, public relations/corporate communications, marketing communications, and member and professional relations departments. He is also responsible for helping to guide USP's international activities – including a global drug quality program that assists two dozen countries – as well as the organization's education and market research and information efforts.

Mr. Heyman has more than 30 years of leadership experience in science and technology policy and program management, communications, public affairs, and government and business relations. Before joining USP in December 2008, he served as chief of staff at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), directing and overseeing the strategic planning, evaluation, and external affairs activities of an agency that works to improve U.S. innovation, trade, security, and health and safety. In this role, he led agency interactions with Members of Congress and other policy makers, news media, the public and others. Before assuming the role of chief of staff in 2003, Mr. Heyman held a number of high–level positions within NIST and its parent agency, the U.S. Department of Commerce. He began his career as a reporter and editor for several engineering magazines.

Mr. Heyman holds a master's degree in science, technology, and public policy from the George Washington University and a bachelor's degree in environmental studies and English from the State University of New York, Albany.
