USP Fellowship Program

USP 2008 – 2009 Fellowship Program Six Awards of $25,000 Each

Introduction

Since the USP Fellowship program was initiated in 1981, USP has invested more than $3 million in more than 200 Fellowship awards. For 2008–2009, USP will select 6 finalists from our pool of applicants, for a fellowship of $25,000 each.

Established in 1820, USP is an independent, not–for–profit organization composed of members representing healthcare professions and sciences from academia, industry, and government. USP promotes the public health and benefits practitioners and patients by disseminating authoritative standards and information developed by its volunteers for medicines, food ingredients, dietary supplements, and other healthcare articles used to maintain and improve health, and promote the optimal delivery of healthcare.

Eligibility

Applicants for fellowships must have been accepted for full–time study in a Ph.D. or Pharm.D. program or medical or dental school; have been accepted to a Fellowship Program; or have been awarded a postdoctoral research (nonfaculty) appointment.

Non–U.S. applicants must have a background in standards and currently be enrolled in an equivalent educational program. International students are required to possess the appropriate visa required in order to participate in the Fellowship Program. USP will not assist students to obtain a visa for this purpose. Proof of status may be required by USP as a condition of offering a Fellowship to a student.

Current USP Fellows may apply for a second year's funding; however, second awards are not automatic. Applications for continued funding must include a progress report on the research up to the time of application.

Application Process
Each application must include:
  • A completed application form signed by a university official, faculty advisor, and applicant
  • A curriculum vitae and transcript
  • A progress report on the research if application is for second–year funding
  • A research proposal
Research Priorities
Awards promote education and training of Fellows in the sciences that are applicable to the standardization of drugs, food ingredients, dietary supplements, and other applicable healthcare articles. Priority will be given to areas of special interest to USP, such as:
  • Chemical analysis of botanical dietary supplements
  • Biotechnology–based molecule characterization
  • Methods for reducing solvent use (such as CZE)
  • Powder characterization, water adsorption/desorption
  • Biopharmaceutical quality
  • Pharmacy compounding
  • Development of stability–indicated procedures for compounded preparations
  • Medication error reporting and prevention
  • Clinical decision support
  • Drug utilization review
  • Veterinary medicine
  • Food ingredients
Post–Award Requirements/Institutional Commitment

Resulting publications and/or theses must acknowledge USP financial support, and a copy must be provided to USP for retention. A report on the research accomplishments must be provided by the Fellow no later than three months following the end of the funding period. The Fellow is also required to give a poster presentation at the 2008 USP Annual Scientific Meeting.

As fiscal agents for the Fellow, the institutions receive funds and must provide USP with a summary of expenditures at the end of the annual period. The institutions must agree that funds will not be used to pay overhead or administrative expenses. Awards are to support the Fellow and the costs of the research as submitted by the Fellow and approved by a selection committee. Most of the award should be used as a stipend for the Fellow in accordance with the policies of the institution. The remainder may be used for tuition, travel, research, clerical help, or equipment necessary to carry out the purpose of the award. No portion of the award may be used for teaching, other research, or other services of a part–time nature unless these components are a condition for the degree.

Selection Process

Applications are reviewed by a Review Panel composed of USP Council of Experts Members and/or Expert Committee Members as well as by USP senior staff. Reviewers are selected on the basis of their expertise in standards and matched whenever possible to applicants' research interests. Individuals affiliated with an applicant's institution will not review that application.
