Long-Term Disability (LTD) Insurance

LTD offers a monthly benefit for disability due to injury or illness. After a 90 day waiting period, LTD pays 60% of the employee's base monthly earnings, up to a maximum monthly benefit of $10,900. USP pays the entire cost of the coverage.

Short-Term Disability Insurance

USP offers a short-term disability benefit that provides you with partial salary continuation in the event you are unable to work due to a medically certified, non-work related injury or illness. There is no cost to you.

  • If approved for coverage, you receive short-term disability benefits after a 14-day waiting period. Accrued sick leave and/or vacation leave may be used during the waiting period until coverage begins.
  • Short-term disability benefits are such that USP continues to pay you 100% of your gross salary for up to two (2) weeks.
  • If you remain disabled, you will then receive 75% of your gross salary for up to an additional four (4) weeks; and
  • Benefits continue for an additional four (4) weeks at 66 2/3% of gross salary until you are no longer disabled or become eligible for long term disability benefit payments.
  • Short-term disability benefits are payable up to a maximum of 12 weeks and are taxable to you as regular income.
  • Accrued sick leave and/or vacation leave may be used during the disability period to make up the difference between 66 2/3% of pay and 75% of pay to receive 100% of pay.
  • Benefits are payable while disabled and are taxable as regular income. Employees have the option to use accrued sick leave and/or vacation leave to make up the difference between 66 2/3% of pay and 75% of pay to receive 100% of pay.
