How USP Verifies Ingredients

USP verifies ingredients submitted to its verification program through

  • Audit of manufacturers' quality systems for compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices
  • Review of manufacturing and quality control documentation
  • Laboratory evaluation of ingredient samples from selected lots for compliance with label claims and USP program requirements

USP also tests ingredients that already have been verified to ensure continued compliance with program requirements.

USP tests are carried out in accordance with the USP's official or proposed standards for dietary supplement ingredients, and also against international guidelines where applicable.
