USP–NF's Continuous Revision Process and Superseded Text

The United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary (USP–NF) is continuously revised. Revisions are presented annually in the USP–NF and in twice–yearly Supplements, and as Accelerated Revisions (Revision Bulletins, Interim Revision Announcements, and Errata) in the Pharmacopeial Forum (PF) and on the USP Web site.

Revision Bulletins, USP's most expedited revision route, supersede standards published in the USP–NF and its Supplements (print and online versions). A Revision Bulletin posted on the USP Web site states its official date and the date that it will be incorporated into an official publication.

Interim Revision Announcements are printed in PF and also posted on the USP Web site. IRAs also supersede standards published in the print and online USP–NF and its Supplements. IRAs are incorporated into the next available USP–NF or Supplement according to the following schedule:

IRAs in January–February PF (1) Second Supplement
IRAs in March–April PF (2) Second Supplement
IRAs in May–June PF (3) USP–NF Annual Edition
IRAS in July–August PF (4) USP–NF Annual Edition
IRAs in September–October PF (5) First Supplement
IRAs in November–December PF (6) First Supplement

Errata are posted on the Web site and in PF and are immediately official. Errata are incorporated into the next available official publication.

Once published in the print and online publications, Revision Bulletins, IRAs, and Errata are official immediately (Errata) or as of the date indicated on the Web site and not subject to the general six–month delayed official date for the particular publication.

Note: USP Revision Bulletins and other Accelerated Revisions are not affected by the USP 33-NF 28 Recall. Revision Bulletins are official as of the date indicated on the Web site. USP has updated the Revision Bulletin text to reflect the USP 33-NF 28 Reissue in the titles of the targeted publications (USP 33-NF 28 Reissue, First Supplement to the USP 33-NF 28 Reissue, or Second Supplement to the USP 33-NF 28 Reissue). These updates occurred February 26, 2010 and March 16, 2010. No other text been updated.
